Canon EOS 5D Mark III launched

Three-and-a-half years ago, Canon kick-started the large sensor revolution with its full-frame DSLR, the EOS 5D Mark II. Since then it has been used on numerous TV dramas, such as House, and other productions to achieve shallow depth of field. Now Canon has introduced the 5D Mark III, which addresses most of the Mark II’s problems.

While the 5D Mark III isn’t the huge leap forward that some users had expected, it does have all the video features previously announced for the up-coming EOS-1D X, but at about half the price, and adds a headphone jack for audio monitoring.

It can record using either interframe or intra-frame compression. The interframe IPB AVC H.264 compression is apparently about 31Mbps (according to the Canon USA website figure of 235MB/min - the 5D Mark II was about 38-40Mbps). However, it has been reported elsewhere as 50Mbps (variable bitrate). The ALL-I intra-frame codec has been reported variously as being 78Mbps, 91Mbps (from the 685MB/min on Canon's US site), and even 300Mbps+ (although maybe that was just the recommended specification for the Compact Flash card). It too is a variable bit rate, and also varies depending on frame rate (going to 81Mbps for 720/60p). However, if we take 91Mbps as correct, that is not necessarily sufficiently better than the Long GoP (group of pictures) interframe compression for broadcast work. The BBC/EBU recommendation for minimum bit rate for interframe is 50Mbps, while for intra-frame recording it is 100Mbps (see What makes an HD camera?) - interframe recording is a lot more efficient than recording all the frames individually, although intra-frame should be easier for post production as the computer doesn't have to look at half-a-second's worth of video just to decode a single frame.

It will shoot 1080 at 24, 25 or 30p, plus 720 at 50/60p (at variable frame rates). There has been a lot of griping that it doesn't do 1080 at 50/60p, but there aren't many professional video cameras that do 50/60p at a decent bit rate, so it's a bit much to expect a relatively low-cost DSLR to do it.

According to Canon, “the new full-frame sensor combines with the vast processing power of DIGIC 5+ [processor] to improve image quality by virtually eradicating the presence of moirĂ©, false colour and other artefacts,” which was the principle problem with the Mark II. In the initial videos released by Canon, these artefacts don’t appear to be noticeable (although the sample online videos are too compressed to make an accurate judgement). There still seem to be some rolling shutter effects (jello), but this appears to be much reduced compared to the Mark II.

Other video related changes include the addition of a movie mode switch and a recording button (similar to the 7D), which enables users to begin shooting immediately when movie mode is engaged (and also allows two completely different settings for movie and stills modes), and locks to prevent accidental exposure changes (something that was a paid upgrade for the Mark II). The rear control wheel is now touch sensitive, so you can make light-fingered adjustments as you are shooting without potentially knocking the camera. Users can also check and adjust audio during recording via the camera’s Quick Control screen. It also adds free-run and rec-run timecode support.

The camera is also considerably better in low light than the Mark II (which was itself a pretty good performer in low light), by about two stops.

There are two card slots (for SD and Compact Flash cards) and users can record to both cards simultaneously, or automatically switch from one to the other when the first card is full. Instead of the 4GB limit per recording (which amounted to about 12 minutes on the Mark II), the Mark III can record up to 29 minutes 59 seconds without pause, as the camera seamlessly connects the 4GB files.

The magnesium body is apparently more weatherproof and durable than the Mark II. It also has a better LCD, using the 3.2-inch 1.04million-dot screen from the 1D X.

One problem with the Mark II that wasn’t addressed was the HDMI output, which still doesn’t produce a clean signal, so can’t be recorded on an external recorder, although the Mark III no longer reduces the resolution to 480p via HDMI when recording starts (which will be better for anyone using an add-on monitor).

Canon now faces a lot more competition than it did in November 2008. The Nikon D800, which should start shipping before April, is the obvious full-frame, full-HD rival, and it will allow a clean HDMI feed for external recording – although not the adjustable audio levels, frame rates above 30fps or higher bitrate in-camera recording of the Mark III (the D800 is limited to 24Mbps).

Canon’s own EOS C300 is a much lauded large-sensor (APS-C/Super 35mm size) video camera, which looks good in low light. And there are now a wide range of large-sensor video cameras that are relatively inexpensive (at least by the standards of a few years ago), from Arri’s Alexa to Sony’s F65, F3 and FS100, and Panasonic’s AF101. At the lowest budget end, Panasonic’s GH2 DSLR can produce lovely-looking video (once it has been loaded with the independent Driftwood hack that allows it record at up to 176Mbps).

At the C300 launch, Canon also promised to introduce a new 4K Cinema EOS full-frame DSLR camera by the end of this year, which may be a further consideration.

“The EOS 5D Mark III represents a big step forward for the EOS 5D series,” said Kieran Magee, Marketing Director, Professional Imaging, Canon Europe.

It “is an exceptional camera and we’ve listened carefully to feedback from its passionate community of users to improve performance in every area. This camera has been designed to meet virtually any creative challenge – it’s faster, more responsive and features the tools to adapt to everything from studio photography to creative videography, while producing results of the highest quality,” he claimed.

The EOS 5D Mark III will be available from end of March 2012, with a list price of £3,000 / €3,570 including VAT, or $3,500.

Canon EOS-1D X filmmaker’s DSLR

HD DSLRs have been hugely popular, partly because of their low cost, but also because of the creative possibilities of the large sensor and shallow depth of field. Now Canon has announced its next generation DSLR, the EOS-1D X, which is positioned as "the film-maker’s DSLR" and addresses most of the main problems video users have with its 5D Mark II and 7D cameras.

It will allow users to record full HD movies from its full-frame 24x36mm CMOS sensor with a full range of manual settings to control exposure, focus and frame rate - 1920x1080 at 30 (29.97), 25 and 24 (23.976) frames per second, or 1280x720 at 60 (59.94) and 50fps, plus SD video in PAL or NTSC.

Sound levels can be displayed on the 3.2-inch 1.04million-dot LCD screen and adjusted during a take. It also has SMPTE Timecode (Rec. Run and Free Run), so you can synch it with other cameras or audio recorders.

It will use a new H.264-based intra frame (ALL-i) video codec to maintain higher video quality (and to be more edit friendly), limiting compression to retain more information for post-production – although it appears that it is still 8-bit video (.MOV files). Canon hasn't yet revealed what bitrate it will use, but anything less than the 50Mbps required by most broadcasters for HD (and offered by Canon's XF range of video cameras) would be a disappointment (and the only, unconfirmed, report there is about the bit rate is that it will record six minutes on a 16GB card, which is about 44Mbps). There is also an interframe IPB long-GoP compression option.

Dual Digic 5+ processors

It has dual Digic 5+ processors that work to reduce moiré artefacts, rolling shutter effects and chromatic aberration. There is no line skipping, which will also help deliver a cleaner picture. The new Digic 5+ processor is 17x faster than the Digic 4.

The camera also offers longer recording, automatically creating a new file once the 4GB file limit has been reached, which allows it to record for up to almost 30 minutes at a time (up from about 12 minutes before the 4GB limit kicked in). The new 29 minutes 59 seconds limit is due to EU levies on video recorders, which would result in about a 30% price increase if it recorded for 30 minutes or longer. It has two Compact Flash card slots for recording.

The sensor has much improved light gathering capabilities and wider dynamic range (the individual pixels are 0.55 microns larger than those on the 5DMkII's sensor, with gapless microlenses for enhanced light gathering efficiency, higher sensitivity and less noise at the pixel level). 

The ISO range for movie shooting now runs from ISO 100 to 51,200 (for stills it can be expanded to go from 50 to 204,800). In the sample EOS-1D X movie on the Canon website, the video was recorded at ISOs up to 25,600 with no appreciable noise – at least not viewable at the resolution the video is shown at.

There is also a dedicated Digic 4 processor for the metering system, which also handles face detection and colour to ensure correct exposure levels and improved auto-focus tracking, using a redesigned 61-point focusing system.

It has a Gigabit Ethernet port (above - top right), which could mean it can download video remotely and enhance its remote control capabilities, but exact details of what this might enable for video weren't revealed.

The EOS-1D X is also Canon's top-end stills camera, replacing both the 1Ds Mark III and 1D Mark 4, and shooting 18.1-megapixel images at up to 14 frames per second. It will cost about $6,800/£5,299/6,299 when it ships at the end of April [UPDATE - now expected mid June 2012].

EOS milestone

Canon produced its 50-millionth EOS-series SLR camera in September (having made 10 million EOS cameras in just 16 months), and expects to have manufactured 70 million of its EF lenses by the end of October (producing 10 million in a mere nine months) – it started manufacturing both ranges of cameras and lenses in 1987.

Anton/Bauer Matrix Cheese Plate

The new Matrix Cheese Plate from Anton/Bauer can be used to attach its Gold Mount batteries to Sony's PMW-F3, Canon's EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 7D and EOS 60D DSLRs, Panasonic's AG-AF100/AF101 and the Red Epic.

The Matrix Cheese Plate mounts directly on a 15mm or 19mm rod system (15mm or 19mm clamp kits sold separately), to allow for easy mounting of a variety of Gold Mounts including:
- QRC-DUAL PT – Gold Mount with 4-pin XLR and two PowerTap outputs for the Sony F3, which also mounts directly to the AJA Ki Pro Mini;

Gekko lenslite DSLR mount

Gekko Technology will introduce a new DSLR mount for its established lenslite at IBC. The mount will allow direct attachment of the colour-stable, robust ringlight to Canon 5D, 7D and Nikon D3 cameras.

It will fix directly to the base of the camera via the tripod screw and secures 15mm bars that hold the lamp head on axis around the lens. The base of the mount has an additional fixing so the camera/lenslite combination can still be mounted on a tripod, but with the centre of gravity moved forward for stability.

“DSLR cameras such as the Canon 5D have become very popular tools for video content acquisition and look likely to remain so given their versatility,” commented Gekko founder and MD, David Amphlett. “The new lenslite DSLR mount provides all the benefits of a high-quality solid-state fixture that was once only the domain of much larger professional cameras."

Designed for studio or location production, and with a colour temperature of 5600K, lenslite delivers 260 foot candles of intensity at a distance of 1m. It can be used as a primary light source or as soft fill, and powered by any 12-volt to 40v power source. Accessories include filter stages, gel holder, gel cutting template, adjustable French flag, wireless or cabled dimmers and a remote DMX interface.

AF101's first broadcast production

A production for Al Jazeera's Witness strand is believed to be the first to use Panasonic's AG-AF101 large-sensor camera for broadcast work.

It is being used for a documentary set in the Great Lakes region of Africa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, about how women raped and abused during the conflict are rebuilding their lives.

The production required a robust, agile camera that could capture the beauty of the environment, and the AF101 was chosen because of its light weight, large sensor size and solid-state storage, according to Fiona Lloyd-Davies of Studio 9 Films (pictured on location in the Congo).

"With no tape mechanism and no moving parts, the camera worked faultlessly in all conditions, delivering excellent results," said the award-winning producer/director. "This is a beautiful part of the world and I wanted a camera that could do it justice. Not only did the 101 bring out the vivid colours of the people and their environment, but its four thirds chip allowed me to adjust the depth of field to great effect."

She wanted to step up from the Sony Z1 or Z5 type of camera, but didn't want a larger camcorder, particularly as she is shooting by herself. She did have a fixer working with her, but he's not a camera assistant or sound recordist. "So I had to find something I could work with on my own," in a very difficult place to work.

It was also "very important to use a format that would be visually very strong and would give great pictures," she explained.

"Some people suggested using the Canon 5D, but as far as I understand it doesn't handle movement very well and doesn't have XLR [audio inputs] or handle sound very well."

As she was preparing to leave for Africa for the first part of her shoot, the London-based hire company she was using, VMI, received its first AF101. "They have been absolutely magnificent. They gave me a huge amount of technical assistance."

Working in the Congo there was no chance of getting something fixed if it went wrong, so it was important that everything was reliable (especially as she didn't have the budget for a second camera body, which she would have liked to be able to bring) – fortunately it was.

The main downside with the AF101 is that it doesn't record at 50Mbps in the camera (it records AVCHD at 24Mbps to two SD card slots, which doesn't meet Al Jazeera's technical requirements), so VMI added a Convergent Design nanoFlash rig to the camera, which can record MXF or QuickTime files to Compact Flash cards. Before she left, she did some tests with the AF101 for Al Jazeera, which they were happy with.

The nanoFlash was attached to the camera's HD-SDI connector, and the resulting 50Mbps broadcast-compliant files were downloaded daily onto two separate rugged drives.

She also recorded simultaneously to the SD cards, which gave the security of a high resolution back-up and ensured that the nanoFlash was in sync with the camera, being set up to record when the timecode changed on the HD-SDI output. When the camera recorded, Lloyd-Davies could be confident that the nanoFlash was recording.

Having an external recorder wasn't a perfect solution. "There were occasions where I started shooting and realised it wasn't connected and had to start again." It was also hard to tell how much time she had remaining on the cards when she was concentrating on operating the camera.

The nanoFlash was powered by the main Anton/Bauer camera battery pack rather than a separate power supply to ensure that she could not start shooting only to discover later that the nanoFlash had run out of power.

"This is a new camcorder with a third party recording device. With limited technical support available in Eastern Congo, we needed to know that it would be fool proof. VMI carried out full testing before we hired the unit and gave us an excellent grounding in operating the equipment and getting the workflow right," she said.

A further problem was having enough electricity to charge the batteries and download all the cards to disk each evening. She was staying at a priest's house that only had a small generator on for a few hours each night, luckily it was just about possible to view and back-up everything in that time. She also had to clean all the kit each night, as the conditions were so dusty.

She needed to remain mobile, so needed to limit the amount of equipment she took. She was also on a tiny budget, "which is why I'm self shooting and doing everything myself."

It is her first time working with solid state and she took two 500GB FireWire drives, backing up to both each night. She had wanted to take larger drives but they didn't arrive in time. The nanoFlash can record at much higher bit rates, but "if I had recorded on more than 50Mbps I would have run out of space." She is shooting a lot of footage, hoping to capture some great moments, and took five 32GB Compact Flash cards, for the nanoFlash, although the most she recorded to on one day was four.

Each card took about 25-35 minutes to back up. She also downloaded the video from the SD cards each evening too.

She used prime lenses, which meant she had to think more about what type of shot she wanted and why. However, "the quality of the prime lenses is fantastic," although she was very mindful of how critical the focus was, especially in such bright sunlight, where the LCD screen was hard to see.

Nevertheless, "it was a really nice camera to work with," she said. "The pictures looked great. I felt I was working with a much higher calibre camera than the Z1 or Z5."

She has also been shooting a project for the BBC in the Congo over the last 18 months, but not in HD.

"I'd love to use the camera again. I think it's a great camera and the quality is fantastic, but it depends on the broadcaster as well," she added.

Lloyd-Davies will be returning to the Congo for a second shoot in May, together with an AF101, to finish the film, and then edit it in June on Final Cut Pro.

Canon updates EOS Final Cut Plug-in

Canon is showing the latest update for its EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Apple’s Final Cut Pro at NAB. The software provides quicker and easier editing of EOS Movie footage for FCP users.

The new version (1.2) will make importing EOS Movie files easier, allowing users to transfer files from any folder, without needing to mirror the folder structure on the camera itself.

It also enables smoother importing from Canon’s EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV models, allowing users to import footage without requiring the THM file generated by the camera.

The plug-in is designed to seamlessly convert EOS Movie footage into Apple’s high-quality ProRes 422 codec about twice fast as Apple’s standard conversion.

EOS Movie Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro version 1.2 will be available to download free from 25th April 2011.

Kino Flo fluorescent lights launched

Kino Flo has announced two new fluorescent lights for studio and location use: the Imara and Tegra.

The Kino Flo Imara S10 and S6 fixtures are designed for studio and film set use. The fluorescent cool lights have a concentrated spread of light along both horizontal and vertical axes. The ten-tube S10 has the same light output as a VistaBeam 600, but draws only 3.2 amps at 230vAC.

"It has a new reflector, new optical design, is very lightweight, very thin, and very efficient," explained its UK distributor, David Morphy, director of Cirro Lite (pictured above with a prototype S10).

They are dimmable and switchable (2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 tubes lit up – depending on the model), with DMX as standard. They should be available in May.

"We've already sold a lot of these, for TV studios doing sitcoms and soaps, as well as commercials and films," said Morphy, who has been demonstrating a prototype to potential customers.

Both models use Kino Flo’s True Match high colour rendering 55W compact lamps (CRI 95) at 2900K, 3200K and 5500K.

Also new is the Kino Flo Tegra, a 4ft (120cm), four-bank lamp with integral dimmer. "It's like a big Diva-Lite, except you can switch each bulb and dim it," he explained. This 100W unit is claimed to output as much light as a 1,000W tungsten softlight.

It is aimed at the likes of Canon 5D Mark II users, who are trying to shoot in a filmic style, but who don't have a big crew and perhaps want to have a couple of lights around the camera. "It's quicker and easier to use and very lightweight." It will also be available in May.

DSLR v Video: Why not both?

A matter of choice: Gollner and Davis (and Canon 550D DSLR)

HD DSLRs are now widely used for video production, even for prominent TV series and movie making. Users love the shallow depth of field and low cost of entry. But just how useful are they for professional production, how do they compare to low-end video cameras, and can they withstand the introduction of large sensor video cameras that give the same look but without the operational problems?

"The tones of the images, the look, the range of lenses, the animation capability – they make these cameras a dream for independent filmmakers, but they're not good for everything. For the videographer who gets paid to shoot, run around, be quick, gather audio, videos, interviews. Quick turnaround. Guaranteed results, meaning its not going to screw up; the DSLRs have proved far from ideal," said Rick Young, editor/director/cameraman, MacVideo.TV.

For him it's not a matter of choosing one over the other, "they're both fantastic," but of choosing the right one for a particular shoot.

Producer/director, Matt Davis, MDMA, has a Sony EX1, and wanted to do wider shots. So, he bought expensive wide-angle adapters, but then worked out that a Canon 550D costs less than the adapter, even including the wide angle lens (he bought a Tokina 11-17mm zoom, which he praises for its sharpness). "The wide angle experience has been absolutely monumental. It does everything that an EX1 can't. There is no droop at the sides. It's got this wonderful panoramic feel. It is a smaller camera that can get into smaller places." He is only now investing in longer lenses.

"It had to work with an EX1. It couldn't just stand on its own looking beautiful and arty. It had to play fair with the rest of the video family." He makes sure that both the DSLR and the EX1 are shooting within similar contrast ranges "It's close, but it's not exact. It still needs a little bit of finishing off in Final Cut," to match the two pictures, but that is now quick and straightforward.

When he cuts the two together, it is difficult to spot the difference. The blacks can give the DSLR footage away. The EX1 can use Cine Gamma to give soft ramping in the blacks, and the DSLRs don't necessarily have that exposure range. "They're pretty and they're good, but they have limits, and you really can't push beyond those limits like you can with a decent broadcast camera," said Davis.

"If you look at DSLRs in isolation they look fantastic," said Young. "But when you put it together [with video], that's when you can really see the difference."

Young has augmented his two Sony EX1Rs and two JVC HM100s with two Canon 5D Mark IIs with Canon 16-35mm and Sigma 12-24mm lenses, "and it's staggering what you can get out of it. And even if I only use the DSLR for nothing but those wide shots, it would suit a fantastic purpose. The cost of buying a serious wide-angle lens for conventional video technology would be more than probably buying the whole DSLR package," he told the recent MacVideo Expo in London.

"We need this technology. It doesn't mean that it is everything; it complements what we've got, but it doesn't necessarily take over," although it has become "an integral part" of the kit he needs.

Overcoming limitations

"It's just another tool, and it's a very exciting tool," said Den Lennie, founder, F.Stop Academy, who shoots with a wide range of cameras from Digital Betacam to XDCAM EX and DSLRs. He has produced four training DVDs dealing with HD DSLRs, but they have not all been shot using DSLRs. The 5D Mark II training videos were shot on a Sony XDCAM 350, while the Canon 7D DVD was shot on an EX1 and 5D Mark II.

"The limitations of DSLRs particularly lie in the audio," and when he was shooting in Malaysia with Dan Chung it was essentially a two hour documentary, which would have been much more difficult to do if he had to use a separate audio recorder (see some clips from it at www.dslrvideoonassignment.com). However, the training video uses both EX1 and DSLR footage cut together, which works very well. "You really don't have to do a lot of work [in post] if you match your cameras up beforehand," he added.

He tends to roll the sharpness, contrast and saturation down on the 5D Mark II, and bring a little back in post if necessary, and also roll down the detail settings on the EX1. The fundamentals of the craft of filmmaking remain the same whichever you use.

Alex Gollner, producer/director/editor, Alex4D.com (who has created a wide range of free Final Cut plug ins), now uses a Canon EOS 7D and 5D Mark II as his primary cameras, only occasionally using video cameras.

He likes to use a DSLR because he so often has to interview people in small rooms where the background would be distracting if he didn't have shallow depth of field. It also allows him use a very small lighting kit, enabling him to set up more quickly. He doesn't do news style material with it, where he would choose his HDV camcorders.

DSLRs give "blurred backgrounds behind my interviewee" and a "touch of class" to the result, he feels.

He uses a Zoom H4n recorder for audio and gets his subject to clap. "Synching only takes a few moments, as long as I don't stop and start the camera too often, and make sure they answer in less than 12 minutes," due to the file length restrictions.

He generally uses the camera locked off and just zooms in in post for close ups, as 720p is what most clients want the video delivered in.

When shooting on the EX1, Lennie uses a Tiffen low contrast filter to help smooth out some of the contrast so it matches better with the DSLR. "It is much easier to shoot on video where it's necessary to shoot in difficult conditions or where you are working as a one man band rather than using the Zoom recorder." If he has to synch DSLR audio in post, he uses PluralEyes (www.singularsoftware.com).

He filmed a concert recently for The Skids on five 7Ds, where the 12 minute recording limit was an issue (similar to shooting on film), so they staggered the recording on each camera by about 30 seconds and stopped/started recording one by one at the end of each track, for a two hour shoot. "You make a decision on what's right for the project," he said.

Davis feels that there is space for both proper video cameras and DSLRs at the moment, until the large sensor video cameras establish themselves. "I definitely do need both because there is no such thing as a single perfect camera." He finds that people react differently to stills and video cameras. Sometimes, if they see a DSLR, they may pose as if for stills, so you can get less posed reaction shots with a video camera.

Lennie doesn't worry about rolling shutter effects, as it's not an issue for most of what he shoots, while problems with moiré can be countered by using filters or defocusing. "It's just a limitation of the technology." He feels that DSLRs are particularly good for shooting in the back of a cab or other confined space.

Even with the Panasonic AF101 and Sony F3 coming along, Young feels that DSLRs still have some advantages, such as their compact size. He finds all of his cameras equally useful and they are used for different things.

Reflecting on glass

One problem, said Davis, is that a 50mm lens is not really a 50mm lens on cameras that use APS-C (which has a 1.5x or 1.6x crop factor) or Micro Four Thirds (2x) sensors. "The standard lens on a full frame camera is quite a long telephoto on a Four Thirds camera."

However, he feels that investing in glass will hold its value. "Glass can be a long term investment. The back end doesn't matter. Think about the front end."

"My clients are not going to see too much of a distinction in between video quality" on these cameras, said Gollner. It's more his own pride that makes the difference.

"If the client's images look better and they are paying less or the same for a higher quality product, that makes you look good," added Lennie.

Gollner believes that he could possibly achieve the same with DV or HDV, but it would take some extra work. "I'm just getting better quality pictures for a little less work than I used to a few years ago."

"It's all about the pictures […] who cares about what the camera is," added Lennie, "It doesn't really matter what you shoot on if you know how to shoot well."

"For extreme wides and extreme beauty shots," DSLRs "can't be beat," concluded Young, but for most other things, especially long record times and having all the right controls in the right place, he turns to his video cameras.

CamCage seeks Kickstart support

An animator has created an interesting new low-cost camera cage that will be produced if prospective purchasers pledge the $20,000 he needs.

The CamCage Mini is a softly rounded aluminium camera bracket that securely surrounds your camera on three sides with handles and is joined by two brackets that can carry the camera and accessories.

The initial $20,000 needed for the first production run of 125 units is being gathered through the new US-based Kickstarter project, which requires prospective users to pledge money – they will then be the first to get their hands on the units (although nothing is paid over until the full amount is reached, which has to be before the cut-off deadline in this instance of December 14).

The $160 CamCage Mini can fit any camera that is 12.5cm high (plus the quick release plate), which includes many compact camcorders and almost all DSLRs, such as the Canon 5D Mark II. It weighs 660g.

Its maker, Bryan Evans, who works in the animation business in Los Angeles, believes that it will be ideal for extreme sports, such as skating, diving, surfing or any action filming with camera movement, which it helps stabilize. "The curved handles have incredible strength and great grip feel to inspire confidence in the field or studio," he claimed.

"When I shoot video I like to move the camera and get a variety of angles, and this lead me to look at camera holders of all kinds. I did quite a bit of research and was struck by two things: first, almost all of them are really expensive; and, second, they weren't really designed for the human hand. So I decided to build my own," he explained. "It gives your camera more handle area than any other camera rig in existence at a lower cost."

Evans built prototypes out of inexpensive PVC pipe and has put a DIY CamCage video on his site if anyone wants to build their own – for about $30 in materials (http://camcagesystems.com/diy). "In the end, I wanted something stronger, with larger diameter tubes for better handgrip," so he turned to metal, which lead to "an entirely new bracket design, which is an open accessory platform. You can put microphones, lights, monitors, audio recorders (I've used the Zoom H4 and H1 both); anything that attaches to a quarter-inch thread or a one-inch tube works great on this." He envisages versions for larger cameras if this one is a success.

[UPDATE: Funding was unsuccessful on the Kickstarter project, however, CamCage is going ahead with limited production runs - and the standard unit is available for pre-order at $159 flat pack or $199 fully assembled]

Beating budget bugbears and bitrates

There is a lot of really great technology being used on budget cameras – unfortunately, not all on the same camera…

Whether you are using an HD DSLR or any of the many compact camcorders, it is possible to produce very nice looking pictures. It isn’t easy and broadcasters might flinch from the results because some aspect of your camera doesn't meet their technical requirements for HD. However, the distance between the camera you have and the camera you need seems bridgeable. So, why isn't it being bridged?

At the HD Masters 2008 conference, Andy Quested, principal technologist, BBC HD, stated that he essentially wanted a camcorder with the front end of a Sony EX1 and the back-end of a Panasonic HVX 200 (or similar), as the BBC didn't believe that compact cameras with sensors of less than half an inch or inter-frame camera compression below 50Mbps were good enough for HD. Given that as the BBC goes, many others would follow, you'd think manufacturers would have rushed to produce something with exactly those specifications.

After all, there are an awful lot of Sony Z1 HDV camcorders out there (which were used to shoot observational documentaries and more in standard definition), and production companies are crying out for an HD replacement.

For that market, size is critical, as is ease of use. Price is also an issue, but less critical than you might think if the technology is right. However, manufacturers would prefer that broadcast users would buy their larger, more expensive models, which are not what productions need.

At the moment, the closest to the ideal seems to be the new Canon XF300 and XF305 camcorders, which are the most affordable cameras on the BBC's latest list of approved cameras for HD production – although they are only permitted for use by independent productions. The XF300 costs less than £6,000, while the XF305 (pictured) adds HD-SDI output, Genlock input and Time code i/o for about 10% extra. The other cameras on the approved list cost at least three or four times more.

The XF models are Canon's first Full HD MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps camcorders (meeting one of Quested's parameters). They record MXF files to Compact Flash cards, and are highly compatible with broadcast post production. Most rival cameras record 4:2:0.

However, behind their 18x L-series HD lenses, the cameras have three 1/3-inch CMOS sensors. Although they are claimed to offer "exceptional colour accuracy, wide dynamic range and low noise" and use high-speed data readout (2x speed) to minimise the rolling shutter skew common to most CMOS camcorders, the sensor size isn't ideal.

The cameras also offer slow and fast motion recording, with 20 speeds to choose from in 720p mode and nine in 1080p (normal recording speeds are 1080 50i or 25p, 720 50/25p (in the European versions). The upcoming Canon XF100 and XF105 use the same recording system, but have only one CMOS sensor, which will inevitably diminish picture quality - even if that won't be evident to many viewers. However, their size seems perfect for typical self shooters.

Sensor sensibility

What many productions would like are larger sensors. Much larger. Conventional broadcast cameras tend to use three 2/3-inch sensors, but HD DSLRs usually use a single APS-C sensor (some 5.5 times larger and roughly the size of a 35mm movie frame). This gives very shallow depth of field and permits the use of a wide range of excellent lenses that are often relatively inexpensive (by video standards). Some DSLRs, such as the Canon EOS 7D, can also be fitted with PL-mount cine lenses.

The results can be excellent. However, there are lots of compromises to be made. The latest slew of HD DSLRs from Sony, Nikon and Canon suffer from a range of "features" that can frustrate anyone trying to use them for serious video production.

The recording bitrate on HD DLSRs and budget camcorders is almost invariably too low. The Canon 550D/60D/7D trio are about the best of the bunch, recording at 44Mbps, but Sony's DSLRs record using the more efficient AVCHD, but at just 17Mbps (despite the fact that the AVCHD standard goes up to 24Mbps). Nikon hasn't revealed official figures for its new D3100, but our testing showed about 20Mbps on a pre-production model. At the very least both should have aimed for 24Mbps.

Panasonic's micro-four thirds cameras are similarly constrained – despite the fact that its consumer camcorder division makes a little three CMOS camcorder, the SD700, that records AVCHD at 28Mbps (at 50/60p).

Both Panasonic and Sony also seem to have settled on AVCHD at 24Mbps for their compact professional camcorders, such as Sony's NXCAM or its upcoming DSLR-based Handycam NEX-VG10E (pictured). When Panasonic first showed a mock-up of its forthcoming 3D camcorder it had an AVC-Ultra logo (which would have meant recording up to 200Mbps), although AVC-Intra (at 100Mbps) would have been more than acceptable. Instead, the AG-3DA1 records 24Mbps AVCHD when even its consumer Mini-Me version (the new SD700-based HDC-SDT750) records at 28Mbps…

Bitrate hacked

The improvement a higher bitrate can make is easily seen on Panasonic's GH1 camera. It has been hacked to record at higher bitrates.

Andrew Reid of eoshd.com shot a test on the GH1 at ISO 1600 using both 1080/24p AVCHD at 44Mbps and 720/30p MJPEG at 70Mbps – both show a considerable improvement over the standard 17Mbps, although the AVCHD is a clear winner.

Of course, HD DSLRs have other hurdles to overcome, not least aliasing and moiré patterns, which are evident on Reid's video. Panasonic promises to address this problem with the new AG-AF100 / AG-AF101 camcorder, which is based on the Micro Four Thirds sensor and lens system used by the GH1. However, the AG-AF101 is also limited to AVCHD 24Mbps 4:2:0. It also appears that Panasonic may have taken action to prevent the hack working on the most recent shipments of the GH1, so the AF101 may not be hackable either. Perhaps Panasonic should offer its own 44Mbps (or higher) version at a reasonable mark up.

The NEX-VG10E and AG-AF101 are just the first of several DSLR-inspired cameras coming over the next few months, and hopefully will inspire the likes of Nikon and Canon to respond with more video-friendly features, such as peaking and zebras to aid focusing and exposure, anti-aliasing, better audio controls, those higher bitrates or, at least, HDMI interfaces that allow non-compressed video to be recorded in a nanoFlash or similar higher bitrate recorder. CMOS sensors with less pronounced rolling shutter defects would be nice too.

Despite the problems, the artistic possibilities of HD DSLRs and their ilk can make all the hassle worthwhile. Canon's 5D Mark II, with its even larger full-frame 35mm sensor, was used to shoot the finale of last season's run of House. It had a noticeably different look to the standard film production, but worked well for what they wanted it to do. For the upcoming season of House the 5D will be used routinely on episodes, especially when they want a more intimate look. This certainly proves that the rapid adoption of HD DSLRs has not just been for cost reasons. It certainly hasn't been for ease of use….

First BBC drama shot on HD DSLR

Conker Media, a subsidiary of Lime Pictures, is shooting BBC teen fiction Shelfstackers on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The comedy soap will appear online first then on BBC 2 and is believed to be the first large scale use of a digital SLR camera by a UK broadcaster to date.

Canon updates 5D Mark II firmware


Canon has issued a new firmware update (Version 2.0.7) for its EOS 5D Mark II HD DSLR, mainly fixing a couple of exposure problems.

It fixes a problem where the aperture exhibits abnormal movement when shooting movies in manual exposure mode and Aperture Priority AE (Av mode) using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses). This involves the aperture of the lens changing when the focusing ring is moved (during focusing). This sort of behaviour is often seen on zoom lenses with variable maximum apertures, where the aperture can change during zooming, but shouldn't happen during focusing.

The other exposure problem applies to stills photography (where the exposure information shown in the LCD didn't match what was shown in the viewfinder in manual exposure mode.) The update also fixes a problem with Canon's Wireless File Transmitters.

Sharp-cut Ruby wide-angle zoom lens

Focus Optics has developed a new wide zoom lens, the Ruby 14-24mm T2.8, which is claimed to be extremely sharp, especially at the wide end.

The Ruby is being exclusively distributed by Band Pro, and offers full coverage even for the F35 sensor. It weighs 1.36kg and measures 138mm long, with a front diameter of 110mm, and will accept a 102mm screw-in filter. The lens works on all 35mm PL mounted cameras, including the Sony F35, Arri, Red, and Canon D7, and fits the Canon D5 with an adapter.

Focus direction is reversed to go in the traditional cine direction and it offers longer focus travel at 126 degrees, using an anti-backlash design for accurate focus marks.

Hawk-Woods adapts to HD DSLRs

Hawk-Woods' new battery power adaptors for Canon's HD DSLRs will allow the cameras to be used with high-capacity broadcast batteries. The DC-5D adaptors for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D cameras feature a cable mounted dummy LP-E6 type battery (as used in the DSLRs), which is linked to either a 2-pin D-Tap, or 4-Pin Hirose plug.

This allows the cameras to be powered from V-Lok (or other) types of battery when plugged into a suitable power output. This could be a rig mounted V-Lok plate, or stand alone V-Lok adaptor, like the Hawk-Woods VL-A1. This means that run-time can be increased immensely, especially for applications like time-lapse photography.

HD DSLRs - the film look on a budget

One of the most exciting developments of the past year, for those whose ambition is larger than their budget, has been the introduction of HD DSLR cameras that offer large sensors and a huge range of lenses for less than the price of a Sony EX1.

It was notable that about half of all the cameras on show at the February Broadcast Video Expo in London were HD DSLRs – the previous year there had only been one (on the Canon stand). Low-budget filmmakers were the first to realise the potential, but now programmes you might have heard of are using them.

Cine lenses for HD DSLRs

Carl Zeiss is creating a set of prime (from 18mm to 85mm) and zoom lenses for HD DSLR cameras.

Its upcoming Compact Prime CP.2 and Lightweight Zoom LWZ.2 lenses will have interchangeable mounts that can be used with Canon EF, Nikon F, and PL-mount cameras.

The primes can be used on full frame cameras (like the Canon 5D Mark II), and will all open to T2.1 (although in the press photograph of the lenses, the 85mm is shown as a T1.5). However, the 15.5-45mm/T2.6 zoom lens can only be used with crop sensors (such as on the Canon EOS 7D – up to 24.9x18.7mm, a Super 35mm film frame). The zoom will weigh about 2kg, which makes it useful for Steadicam applications. Thanks to the interchangeable mounts, the lenses should be very attractive to hire companies, as they will cover a wide range of traditional cine cameras and HD DSLRs.

Prices are likely to be at least as much as many of the cameras they are fitted to, and they should be available from June.

Being designed for moviemaking, they will be a lot easier to use than stills lenses, especially for focusing, with longer focus rotation (making it a lot easier to be precise – particularly for manual use).

The iris opening in the prime lenses uses 14 high-precision blades, which stay consistently round and symmetrical over the entire T-stop range. This should translate into natural and pleasing out-of-focus highlights and a smooth bokeh (the ring around the blurred highlights). The lens design and tight tolerances are claimed to "ensure low distortion, high resolution and excellent colour rendition for sharp, punchy images."

Graeme Beck: HD DSLRs and hybrid cameras

 
Graeme Beck is an Australian cinematographer, and inventor of the Hyper 35 – a mash-up of an old Sony Betacam camcorder and a Canon 5D Mark II, which makes the Canon easier to use and a lot more ergonomic (as it can act as a shoulder-mounted camcorder). The 5D can also be taken out of the Hyper 35 and used on its own.

I interviewed Beck for an article on HD DSLRs for TVB Europe magazine, but was only able to use a little of what he told me in that. However, he had a lot of interesting stuff to say, so here it is, in full:

"The Canon 5DMKII with its large capture area is a breakthrough in cinematography. Its large capture area is similar to Panavision's 35mm Anamorphic system and a little under 70mm, but by being able to use spherical lenses that are over a stop faster, it is capable of producing shallow focus pictures that have not been seen in motion pictures before," he said.

The Hyper 35

"The Hyper 35 rig is a hybrid of the 5D and a Sony Betacam and it brings the speed and accuracy of ENG style shooting to 35mm. The rig supports the Canon 5D and taps off a video feed to the rig's viewfinder and monitors. Audio can be recorded by the camera directly or fed into the Canon 5D where the leads are protected by a light aluminium frame that surrounds the camera.

"The electronic viewfinder is essential for the critical focus required for HD and especially the shallow focus of full frame 35mm. It is the peaking circuits that help you snap focus quickly and accurately during a shot.  Having a rotating viewfinder is also essential for everyday shooting.

"The Hyper 35 rig is about half the weight of a Betacam and balances nicely on your shoulder with Canon's zooms and prime lenses or clicks straight back onto the tripod. The 400mm [lens] needs the support of the rails.

"The Canon 5D is attached to the rig via a Sachtler 'touch and go' plate for quick release of the 5D body. The 5D can be 'click' attached onto a Merlin Steadicam, either the handheld or arm version, or clicked straight onto a tripod.  Other 'touch and go' systems could be easily adapted to the 5D and Hyper 35 rig.

"The Hyper 35 rig doesn't leave the client bewildered as the Canon 5D on its own invariably does. I also use the 5D on its own with or without a loupe [magnifying viewfinder attachment] on the back and it is excellent for gorilla shooting. "

- What sort of projects have you shot using the DSLR (hybrid or otherwise)?

"I have been shooting a lot of Corporate and Industrial videos with the 5D and have a film to shoot next month. If the 24p upgrade had been around last year I would have been able to shoot a feature then. I did some tests on the big screen and was blown away the results. We projected it alongside the RED and I couldn't see any difference. Although the RED is cleaner in noise while comparing the pictures on a monitor, the 5D has more 'life' similar to the random grain of film. At times I also operate the camera for other DPs."

- Why did you chose to use a DSLR instead of (or alongside) a conventional video camera?

"The full frame 35mm produces images that have a more three dimensional quality to them when compared to smaller format cameras like 1.85 and other 35mm digital cameras. By looking at any picture now I can tell what format it was shot on. Even 3D movies would benefit by using a larger capture area which increases the three dimensional depth.

"The first time I saw images from this camera that was it for me. I find going back to smaller format cameras annoying, as they are just too flat. Its low light capabilities leave any camera for dead. It is a clear three stops faster than any camera I've used. As a cameraman for the last 30 years I've just about used every camera made and this camera literally sees in the dark. "

- What problems did you face that you wouldn’t normally face using a video camera, and how did you overcome them?

"The main problem with DLSRs is that they are difficult to use for general shooting. A loupe on the back of the camera helps, but as focus is a lot more critical on HD and 35mm, without peaking circuits it is not good enough. Although the 5x and 10x blowup [magnifying display on the Canon's LCD] with the touch of a button is handy for setting focus, it is difficult to adjust critical focus during a shot. Also a non-rotating viewfinder makes operating difficult with varying camera heights. The Hyper 35 rig with its electronic viewfinder overcomes this problem.

"The Canon 5D also has electronic iris control that is lumpy in 1/3 of a stop increments. When needed, I use two high transmission polarizing filters with one reversed or set the ASA  [ISO] setting to automatic to overcome this problem." If you don't have a mattebox, you could fit a Light Craft Workshop Fader ND adjustable ND filter, which does the same thing, but is a lot smaller. We have one and it seems to work well.

- How do you set up the camera (in terms of menu settings, 24/25/30p or 50/60p, highlight tone priority, etc.)?

"Apart from using the extended highlight range, which gives you an extra stop in the highlights at the expense of 1 stop in ASA [ISO] rating, I leave all the other settings pre-set. I also find recording in 1/30th second fine on motion when shooting in 30fps or when using reverse pull down to 25fps. In projected tests in the cinema it actually helped a little in motion blur, but it goes against convention for progressive shooting. Maybe it is not true 1/30th of a second, must find out what is going on there."

- Did you have problems with aliasing or moiré patterning?

"With Adobe Media for editing and transfers I don't have any aliasing or moiré problems and find it is similar to any other video camera I've used. "

- How do you use the camera (lens choice, rig, follow focus, viewfinder, Steadicam, etc.)?

"I have a set of Canon's zooms for general shooting and a set of Canon's super speed prime lenses, which really separate the subject from the background when used wide open. I also have the 400mm and a wide-angle shift and tilt, which is great for bringing low angle wide shots into better perspective. Also you can do some creative effects with it. The 5X macro brings up an Ant into full frame for that occasional macro shot.  I also have three camera bodies, extension tubes, doublers and extensive filter sets. 

"Having the lightweight Merlin hand held Steadicam in a small box brings great production value and I will be equipping this with wireless focus control in the future. I can also attach the Merlin to its vest, which looks a bit more impressive and takes the weight off your arm. Both systems produce much better results than hand holding the camera. I have never used follow focus much with video cameras as you are generally shooting with a lot less light and the focus marks cannot be drawn fine enough at times.

"The peaking circuits in the [Hyper 35's] electronic viewfinders are accurate and easy to use. At other times I have had two assistants working the focus, one calling out the marks as the other concentrates on the lens. This system has been more accurate than a single focus puller."

- What were the advantages of using a DSLR?

"Shooting with the Canon 5D full frame sensor brings the look of 35mm Anamorphic to the small or big screen at no cost. The images are outstanding and jump off the screen."

- What other features would you like to see added that would make shooting video easier?

"I would like to see the camera shooting in 10-bit. Panasonic 3000 series, HDCAM SR and Digital Betacam are the only other cameras shooting in 10-bit. All the rest including XDCAM, HDCAM, P2 and Blu-ray are 8-bit. That extra bit depth in acquisition helps a little in the final 8-bit release."

- What was your post-production workflow? How did it differ from normal, and were there any choices you made on the camera that proved particularly successful or unsuccessful in post?


"When the camera first came out in was shooting in 30p only, which is a great speed for the web (and an ideal speed for the cinema). I extensively tested a variation of the 2:3 pull down as used in converting 24p to the NTSC system. A variation of this process produces a nice compromise between the fast look of 50i (25i) and the staccato look of 25p as two progressive frames are followed by three interlaced frames. Sound is perfect and frame accurate over an hour's shooting next to a DVCAM. It is time consuming in post so the new 24/25p upgrade will be used more often here. On some projects I will still be shooting in 30p as it is great for the web, and universal for NTSC and PAL without any pitch changes. 

- How successful were the results?


"Even my wife can see the difference in the pictures you get from this camera."

HD DSLRs: Still developing

Review of the Canon EOS 7D - DSLR Camera

There has been a lot of interest amongst video users in digital stills cameras recently, mainly because DSLR camera manufacturers like Canon, Nikon and Pentax have brought out reasonably priced, large sensor models that can record HD. Now, if you want a 35mm camera that can shoot HD (720p or 1080p), and take different lenses, you can buy one for less than the price of a used Sony EX1.

Canon has been the major player, especially with its 5D mark II, although that only records at 30 frames per second. We have been promised a firmware upgrade which should add 24 and 25fps - possibly due April 2010.

However, the latest Canon EOS 7D already has all the frame rates, and costs less, although it has a smaller sensor (APS-C, about 23x15mm).

It is an impressive stills camera, but while its 18-megapixel CMOS image sensor is great for still images, CMOS is not so suitable for video (although many video cameras have them). One of its problems is skew. This happens when you pan the camera and verticals don't look vertical on recording because the CMOS sensor reads line by line rather than all at once.
Some users may also notice aliasing. 

But, in the right hands DSLRs can produce stunning results.




The Canon EOS 7D It is not exactly a light camera (it weighs about 1.39kg with an 18-135mm zoom lens). Even with the image stabilisation in the lens switched on it was tricky to hold still because you couldn't hold it up to your eye (in video mode it only uses the rear LCD) so, it went on my Miller tripod and stayed there.

The 7D offers ISO speeds of 100-6,400, expandable to 12,800. My first thoughts were that any image taken at such a high ISO would be very grainy – but the camera's DIGIC 4 processors remove colour and luminance noise to give a cleaner image.

It has the usual optical eyepiece and a 3-inch LCD with 920,000 dots. I'm used to staring at LCD screens on cameras like the Sony HVR-Z1 with only 250,000 dots, so the Canon's screen was a joy to watch. Unfortunately, it is shiny and you do get a lot of reflections that are distracting when trying to shoot. If you were seriously considering buying this camera (or any of the other DSLRs) for video work you should take a look at the Zacuto Z-finder V2. It will keep out the light from the screen and, importantly, act as an extra point of contact with your body, for stability, if you are going hand held.

For video the camera uses MPEG4 AVC encoding wrapped up in a .mov file, and records onto Compact Flash cards at up to 45Mbps.

This is not a format to edit with. So, you'll need to consider software to convert it to something more edit friendly. MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 gets consistently good reviews and is free.

In HD mode you can only record about 12 minutes of video on a 4GB card. There is only one card slot – so you can't hot swap like a Panasonic P2 camera or Sony EX. Buying a bigger card won't necessarily solve the problem, as the camera will stop recording once the file size reaches 4GB. So this might not be the perfect camera for doing that 'locked off shot'.

Stills cameras have been able to shoot video for some time – although not very well. But now the technology has improved and it is hard to deny that the results can be very good. If you are a Mac user there is a lot of help getting your footage from camera into Final Cut Pro. One very helpful page is on Chris Fenwicks site. Vincent Laforet is also very helpful with advice and mentioned an upcoming new plug in (again for FCP).

The audio however is a different story. The camera does have an on board microphone which may come in handy as a guide track but it definitely won't be good enough for broadcast, it will also pick up camera handling noise and wind noise.

You really do need to record the audio on a separate recorder. Trawling through the forums it looks like most people buy the Zoom H4n. It has its own built in stereo mic, if all you need is some atmos. But, it also has two XLR sockets and can record at 48kHz, which should keep your editing software happy. With a splitter you can take an output from the Zoom for monitoring and feed the recorded audio in to the camera as a guide track for synching later. The problem is where do you put it? Maybe it might signal the return of the sound recordist.

If you don't want to be tethered to the recorder. Then you'd better brush the dust off your clapper board as it will once again come in handy to sync sound with vision. Funny how the more technology improves the more we rely on the old ways of working.

The evolution of the video camera has given us a body shape and layout that puts everything you need just where you want it. The iris, gain and white balance can be found without even taking your eye from its fully adjustable viewfinder.

I know many GTC members hate the Sony Z1 type cameras because of (amongst other things) their shape. But these DSLRs are even trickier to hand hold for any length of time. Unless you have the arms of a weight lifter you'll also need some sort of rig to make it feel more like a shoulder-mounted camera. Add in the cost of the viewfinder and your cheap video camera starts to look a little more expensive.

But, if your budget is tight, start with a good old fashioned tripod. I used the camera on a weeks holiday and to keep the weight down I used my Manfrotto 561B monopod (which has feet!).



There is no peaking to help with focusing (and, even if you wanted to, Canon doesn't recommend using auto focusing when the camera is in movie mode.) There are no zebra stripes either, but there is a histogram which takes up about 1/9th of the screen. If you are used to using a shoulder mounted camera then using a DSLR will require some time to acclimatise.

Certainly, if you intend to use the camera, I recommend you download the manual (and any drivers you may need) and have a play with the camera before the shoot. For example, it took me a while to work out how to manually white balance. It isn't intuitive.

Why buy one of these cameras?

Lenses, lenses and lenses. The range of lenses you can get for a DSLR is eye watering, but the prices generally aren't. So, if the director needs a one off special shot in a difficult location this camera could make you the hero of the hour.

I'd recommend you read photographer Doug Klostermann's page on "Why You Shouldn’t Buy the Kit Lens".

If one thing stands out, it is the possibility of very shallow depth of field. It seems everyone wants that film look and with 24p and a little help in post – you can have it at a relatively cheap price. The camera body costs around £1,200.

Time lapse on these cameras is stunning. If you are a timelapse newbie, start with Timothy Allen's starter guide. Take a look at the some great examples of DSLR timelapse by Tom Lowe at TimeScapes.


And if you mix timelapse and HDR (high dynamic range) photography - the results can be beautiful.

If you set the camera to record the largest still image size (5184x3456 pixels) you can import the time lapse stills into your editing software and pan and scan around the video. For a tutorial on how to do this on a Mac, Philip Bloom comes to the rescue. 



However, for timelapse you will have to spend about £100 extra on an intervalometer remote control unit to tell the camera when and how often to take each still image.

If money is tight, this camera may be all your low budget production can afford, and some people have shot incredible footage on it. It is not primarily designed to be a video camera, which means almost everything you do with it will be some sort of workaround, but considering the price, it could be worth the effort.

Would I buy one? 
I originally had a camera on loan from Canon for a week to write this review for the Guild of Television Cameramen's magazine, Zerb. I genuinely liked the camera - enough to buy it. I'm still experimenting with it and it really is essential to have the Zacuto Z-finder, which I now have on order.
